Buy the code book(s) you will work with and study its organization and terminology. Each time a code requires something of you, study that section. If possible, take classes and attend seminars. Knowing the codes will improve your projects; submittals will contain most of what is required, estimates will include code-related costs, and there will be fewer problems as construction proceeds.
